Bands I Love: Grouplove

My love for Grouplove is prolonged and well documented. I was lucky enough to get to work with them at my (soon to be) old job and have been in love since day one. They are a five-piece happy go lucky indie folk outfit, complete with lots of hippie garb. They are fairly young as a band, having only been together since 2009. Even though they would most likely be considered a baby band by many, they are most definitely my band of the summer. I know predicting the next big hipster band is like shooting fish in a barrel, but I sincerely have high hopes for these dudes. I can see them having some real staying power beyond a flash in the pan hit or two. Their entire upcoming album is full of beautiful summer jams.

What's equally as amazing as their music, is the story behind Grouplove. The lead singers, Christian (boy) and Hannah (girl) met in New York City, and have pretty much been inseparable ever since. They took a trip to Greece together, where they met Ryan, Sean and Andrew (swoon). Pretty much since they all met, they've been making music together. They all lived in various places, but relocated to LA to record music together, and all ended up making the relocation permanent. How freaking cute! Things picked up pretty quickly from there- they started playing shows around LA, creating quite a buzz, and inked a deal with Canvasback/Atlantic Records. From there, it has been a whirlwind of awesomeness for the band. They've been touring, playing festivals, and released a peppy, sweet and all around adorable self titled EP.

I've seen Grouplove live too many times to count, and every time I leave their show with a huge smile on my face. Their live show is one of my absolute favorites. It's a parade of happiness and love set to indie rock good vibes. Each time after the show, I walk out of the venue and I just want to hug everyone I know (and some that I don't). The members of the band are all just so in love with each other as human beings, you can't help but feel inspired. They also just seem like total cool kids. But not like the kind of cool kids who would pick on you or anything. Like the kind that I wish I was cool enough to hang out with, and admire from afar with my backbrace and headgear. They're totally the kids who skip out at lunch to smoke weed in the back of someone's Mom's minivan, but somehow make it back in time for 5th period without getting caught by the gym teacher, who like totally has it out for them, and always manage to get good grades despite their party lifestyle and carefree hippie ways. (I think that's a little bit Ferris Bueller's Day Off meets Dazed and Confused meets Romy and Michelle's Highschool Reunion meets Mean Girls?) Totally accurate.

Grouplove's entire existence as a band can pretty accurately be summed up with a few of their lyrics:

And I told my bandmates, they are my soulmates. And I hope we can understand, that this here year has been a big one yeah. We following what we don't plan. Everybody.  Said do you got that, a sweet devotion. Oh will you follow your heart's plan? Oh why not jump into that ocean. And run your fingers through your hair.
-Grouplove {Don't Say Oh Well}

Be sure to check out their debut album Never Trust A Happy Song due out in September! In the meantime, watch their new music video for their new song "Tongue Tied" (one of my faves off their new record.)
