Bands I Love: Alex Winston

You know wht I don't blog a lot about? Star Wars, mid-90s pop stars, snack packs, McDonalds Toys. The list goes on and on. Those are all things that I love, but don't post about. But there's something else that falls into that category that I don't spend a lot of time talking about on here- girl! Like actual girls. Normal girls. Indie chicks. Badass ladies. People with vaginas. I posted about Gaga last week, but she's super-human to me, and totally doesn't fall under the category of a girl. More like an enigma. I hate to admit it, but I listen to dude bands way more than I listen to female artists. I don't know what it is, but I have a harder time relating to females in music in an unironic way... so essentially not Mariah Carey, Cher and Celine Dion. But there are totally exceptions to this rule- Joan Jett, Courtney Love, Emily Haines, Florence Welch, Adele, Karen O, Tegan & Sara. There are definitely more than a few. But when that is contrasted with the number of male fronted bands I listen to, it makes me feel guilty. It's like I feel like I should be more supportive of women in music. SO I'M GOING TO BE!! (This is me making a concerted effort to include women musicians in my blog. You're watching it happen, right now.)

Alex Winston is this total babe who is actually from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, which is not too far form where I'm at in Ohio. She currently lives in New York City, where she works with the production duo, The Knocks, to produce killer eclectic indie pop songs. She has such a unique voice, and writes songs about the most bizarre topics, I can't help but love her. Homegirl has a song titled "Sister Wives." Guess what it's about? YEAH! Only my favorite topic ever. She also has a song about fire ants, which I've been obsessed with since I was a child and was brutally attacked by them in Texas. The cool thing about Alex Winston, to me, is that she seems like a normal girl. Like a girl you could see at the mall, who just happens to be way cooler than everyone else there. She also seems like she smokes a lot of weed. All things that make me like her more.

I've never actually seen her live, which is surprising to me. But if she's ever has a hometown show again, I'll definitely be there. Currently the only tour she has announced is in Europe. If you're anything like me and want to mix up your musical taste with an eclectic indie goddess, check out Alex Winston.
