New Music Obsession: WU LYF

via

Every once in a while I will find a band that I'm so insanely obsessed with, I'll just listen to them over and over and over again until my ears start bleeding. (No srsly.) (But SRSLY.) I haven't found one of these bands in at least a month or two, so right now I'm giddy with music love. All year, I have been hearing about WU LYF (pronounced Woo Life- it stands for World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation. Srsly.)- allegedly this mysterious band from Manchester, England that next to nothing is known about, and who hardly ever does interviews. I figured they were a typical Pitchfork/NME too cool for school buzz band. I'm rude like that. Well... they're not.

I finally started listening to them earlier this week, and I'm flipping the fuck out. Like, I'm having a hard time even dedicating time to writing this because I'm flipping out about them that much. Their music is AMAZING. Like, I want you to stop reading this and just push play on one of the videos below because the music is that good. WU LYF label their music as "heavy pop" and I honestly can't think of a better way to describe it. It's mysterious, semi-unintelligible lyrics with heavy drums and hard breakdowns. It's anthemic and totally epic. Honestly, I feel like I've been waiting for this band for so long. They manage to take the pop music formula and flip it the fuck on its head. How weird can pop music get? Now we have an answer. WU LYF is basically the boy version of Florence & The Machine- but less vocal riffs, more rhaspy chanting and screaming. So... my dream band. There's nothing I love more than a vocalist who can scream his ass off. See: Against Me!  I can't wait to attempt to sing along in my car.

I'm going to shut up so you can listen. I hope you're as mesmerized as I am.
