Guys, I have a new obsession that I HAVE to tell you about- it's this new app I downloaded, Sleep Cycle! For serious, I'm full on bonkers over this app. Is anyone else fascinated by their sleep patterns? Maybe it's just me. It probably is. Don't judge just yet- hear me out. I'm a person who loves sleep. And for how much I love sleep, I never seem to feel well rested. I always wake up groggy and go through the day tired and fueled by caffeine. Not like I'm planning on giving up my serious caffeine addiction anytime soon, but I want to understand my sleep a bit better. Ever since I started watching The Rachel Zoe Project and found out she barely gets any sleep, I've been trying to figure out how she functions. She doesn't sleep at all apparently. Like, she's 12lbs, running a huge company, designing clothes, styling clients, and even has the energy to make sassy comments to her gays. How is that possible?! I read a quote by Nicole Richie in some magazine where she said she wakes up at 5AM every morning or something insane, even if she stays up late. I WANT TO BE LIKE THAT! It's no wonder these ladies are so successful- they never sleep! I've deduced that not sleeping must be the secret behind success. And if you're wondering if my idea of success is Rachel Zoe & Nicole Richie- absolutely they are! If I can have a kid or two, wear awesome clothes and sunglasses inside without getting weird looks and somehow make enough money to hire gay BFFs to do my hair and makeup every morning, I will consider my life happy & successful. Like, pinnacle of success right there.
SO- I've been wanting to figure out what's going on with my lagging tired ass, and how I can function on less than 10 hours of sleep. (Seriously, that's the only way I wake up feeling okay. I usually only get 7 or 8, and I'm tired as SHIT.) I just think I could get so much more done if I could wake up early and GSD! (Get shit done.) So I was talking to one of my friends over the weekend and she told me about this app called Sleep Cycle. It has two functions: it's an alarm clock and it monitors your sleep cycle- when you're wake up at night, when you're in a deep sleep, etc. You place it on your bed, next to your pillow and it does all the work! Allow Sleep Cycle to explain:
So basically, if I set my alarm for 8:30AM, it will wake me up between 8:00-8:30AM, based on my sleep cycle. Granted, if you're in a deep sleep from 8:00-8:30, it's still going to wake you up at 8:30. But ideally (and most likely) you will be fluctuating at that time anyway. Usually my body knows it has to be awake and I'm tossing and turning anyway, but I can usually convince myself to fall back asleep. This handy-dandy alarm clock doesn't let that happen. If it's within your half hour window, it will coax you awake. It plays your alarm music (I have a song from my iTunes) quietly at first and then it slowly gets louder to wake you up. Very different from what I'm used to- I usually literally have a siren alarm wake me up in the morning. It's supposed to ignite an "OH SHIT!" feeling so I jump right out of bed. It doesn't work. I like Sleep Cycle MUCH better!
Then comes my favorite part- looking at your sleep cycle for the night! (I'm such a dork.) The app shows you at what points in the night you were in deep sleep, and all that good stuff. SO interesting! (To pretty much just me.) The first night I used it was Sunday and when I looked at my sleep cycle, I was super impressed with myself. I got all cocky like "Who has two thumbs, speaks Spanish and sleeps like a champ?! ESE CHICA!" (That's what Mexicans sound like when we get cocky.) So I was feeling like a fucking sleeping boss. Then it all turned to shit. Look at the horrible sleep I got on Monday- I'm all over the place! That is not solid sleep at all!! Ugh, cockiness gone. Last night wasn't too great either. I'm no longer the sleeping champ. But at least I know now that if I'm feeling sleepy when I allegedly get 7 hours of sleep, I'm not necessarily sleeping all 7 of those hours. I feel like a detective.
Srsly, this app makes me want to go to bed. Like, that's how obsessed I am with it. It honestly makes waking up in the morning so much better. I'm not being woken up from deep sleep and feeling all disoriented. Waking up from light sleep is SO much better. I realize this is only interesting to about 7 people in the world- but to those 7 people... YOU'RE WELCOME. Seriously, this app is the best. I realize I sound like a paid advertisement (which I'm not... I WISH.) but I'm in LOVE with it. I'm determined to knock my time spent sleeping down to 6 hours soon. Productivity-land, here I come!
